Issue: Transportation

The Northern Virginia region suffers from the second worst traffic congestion in the nation. We need to find ways to cut down on the traffic on our overcrowded roads.

The cost to our citizens is felt not only in the pocketbook but also in time lost. It is estimated that nearly 2.7 billion dollars is spent by auto commuters yearly in the Washington D.C region.

Not only does our traffic congestion hurt our citizens by costing them time and money, but our lack of transportation infrastructure has a direct link to our economic growth. Virginia cannot sustain its role as the economic engine of Virginia if we do not find new, innovative ways to fund our transportation efforts.

To that end, OVN supports:

  • First, changing the current transportation funding formula that discriminates against Northern Virginia.

  • Second, expand metro-rail to Dulles and expand mass transit programs

  • Third, encourage businesses to promote tele-work programs that would lessen traffic on the road

  • Fourth, prohibit the raiding of Virginia's Transportation Fund for other programs that seek to waste the taxpayer's money

  • Fifth, use of public-private partnerships that promote efficient, intelligent transportation systems.
